Data Type Legend
Every field below is tagged with the type of data it collects. Knowing this before you start recruiting tells you which statistical test each variable can later be analysed with — decide it now, not after data collection.
NominalCategories with no inherent order (e.g. sex, diagnosis, drug name). Summarise as frequency/percentage; compare with Chi-square/Fisher's exact.
DichotomousA special case of Nominal (or occasionally Ordinal) with exactly two categories (e.g. Residence: Urban/Rural; Complication: Yes/No; Union: Yes/No). Summarise as proportion; compare with Chi-square/Fisher's exact, or express as odds/risk ratio.
OrdinalCategories with a meaningful order (e.g. grade, stage, severity score). Summarise as median/IQR; compare with Mann-Whitney/Kruskal-Wallis.
DiscreteCountable whole numbers (e.g. number of days, number of doses). Often treated as continuous for analysis if the range is wide.
ContinuousNumerical values that can take any value in a range (e.g. age, blood loss, surgical time). Summarise as mean±SD or median/IQR; compare with t-test/ANOVA or their non-parametric equivalents.
Date/TimeCalendar dates or time stamps — used to calculate durations/intervals, not analysed directly.
Free TextUnstructured narrative data — not directly analysable statistically unless later coded into categories.
IdentifierUniquely identifies the subject/record — excluded from statistical analysis.

*Result/Value's data type depends on the scale used for that outcome — a numerical score (e.g. blood loss, ROM in degrees) is Continuous or Discrete; a scored/staged outcome (e.g. Knee Society Score category, ASA grade) is Ordinal; a present/absent outcome (e.g. infection: Yes/No, union: Yes/No) is Dichotomous.
